The Yin Blade is a special melee weapon that appears in Call of Duty: Undead Warfare. It can be selected in the player's loadout once the player has played a total of 50 matches on the multiplayer map Day of the Departed, a special holiday-themed map created by RoachTheIntelCollector.
Overview[]
Call of Duty: Undead Warfare[]
The Yin Blade is a special three-bladed weapon attached to a chain that is connected to a connector on the top of the hilt. Because of this, it has a longer melee range than most of the other melee weapons in the game. By holding Triangle on Playstation 4 or Y on Xbox One, the player can retract the chain out away from the hilt or bring it in so the blade will be attached to the handle, allowing it to be used more efficiently in close-range-combat.
The blades on the Yin Blade are incredibly sharp, allowing it to be able to destroy most ground based scorestreaks such as the Sentry Gun in one swing.
History[]
At some point in time, the Yin Blade was forged in the realm of Uriqar, using materials primarily composed of Unistone with faint traces of Dark Creation. Through unknown means, the Yin Blade would find its way out of the realm and end up on display at the San Franciso Museum of Craft and Design in the Arc 1 universe of the Roach Chronicles multiverse.
Day of the Departed[]
In 2017 on the night of the Day of the Departed and the legendary Green Eclipse, the universe was visited by the departed spirit of Gruntijackal, who was pulled into the universe through his connection with the Element 115 present in the Green Eclipse meteorite. Using his connection to the Aether, Gruntijackal learned vital information regarding the Yin Blade and its powers, seeking to use it in tandem with the Green Eclipse to form the Rift of Resurrection to revive himself. Gruntijackal soon ventured to the San Franciso Museum of Craft and Design, where he recovered the Yin Blade after fighting off a security guard.
Reaching the roof of the Transamerica Pyramid building, Gruntijackal empowered the Yin Blade with its own dark magic and the power of the Green Eclipse. However, Gruntijackal soon became horrified upon discovering his actions yielded in the creation of a tear to the Fractured Realm, which promptly absorbed him into it. In the process, Gruntijackal accidentally discarded the Yin Blade, where it would soon be recovered by Willard Wyler, who was visiting the area for the Day of the Departed festivities. Understanding the Yin Blade's power through his own connection with dark magic, Wyler departed the scene with the weapon, venturing to his theater in New York City to stash the weapon away within his Zombies in Spaceland film to ensure it never fell into the wrong hands.
Rebirth of Gruntijackal[]
Unfortunately for Wyler, a version of Edward Richtofen's soul had been manipulated by Gruntijackal into securing the Yin Blade once again. Having entered the film in secret, Richtofen managed to find and obtain the Yin Blade, using it to create a new body for himself with the weapon's dark magic, as his soul did not perish like Gruntijackal's before him. Despite Wyler's actions to impede him, Richtofen successfully escaped the film with the Yin Blade, where he would soon use it to strike down Wyler and preserve his soul in the Soul Jar.
Through Gruntijackal's influence, Richtofen gained an understanding of the Yin Blade's powers, and used it to tear open a temporary rift through the Nexus to reach his original universe, the Arc 2 universe. There, Richtofen manipulated the souls within the Soul Jar by converting them into his personal undead army to besiege the nearby city of Green Mountain, Colorado in an effort to draw out survivors strong enough to unknowingly assist him in his plans to seek out the Omega Key, the last relic needed for his master plan. It was here that Richtofen uncovered Xarcoh's soul, and generated a new body for him while simultaneously corrupting his soul through the Yin Blade's dark magic.
Soon after, Xarcoh, under the guise of "The Unknown", saved and befriended Jacob Roberts, Patrick West and Daniela Knight as part of Richtofen's plan, while Richtofen himself located Doctor Samuel Higgins, a leading researcher in various mythical artifacts such as the Omega Key. While struggling against Higgins, Richtofen is temporarily dispatched of the Yin Blade, though he nonetheless managed to one-up Higgins by capturing him within the Soul Jar. The following day, Richtofen managed to successfully trail Xarcoh and the other survivors to the Torngat Mountains in Canada, where the Omega Key resided within a cave. Freeing Higgins from the Soul Jar, Richtofen held him at swordpoint with the Yin Blade before escorting him to the others just as Xarcoh revealed his true allegiences upon securing the Omega Key for Richtofen.
Richtofen and Xarcoh soon prepared the penultimate phase of their plan; to supercharge the Soul Jar with more souls to fuel the MPD for Gruntijackal. Upon forcing the four survivors, now banded under the name Novus, to engage in combat against numerous undead at a facility outside Rio de Janeiro, the villains managed to complete their mission before embarking through a teleporter to Griffin Station on the Moon with the Yin Blade, Soul Jar and Omega Key in hand. Using Element 115 samples previously stashed away in the lunar base, Richtofen and Xarcoh forcefully create a Green Eclipse to grant the Yin Blade the power to tear open the Fractured Realm to free Gruntijackal's diminishing soul. While Xarcoh held Novus at bay with his spatial powers, Richtofen used the Yin Blade to successfully open the Fractured Realm, allowing Gruntijackal to escape befpre Xarcoh promptly sealed the rift to prevent further leakage from the realm.
At the Chamber of Repose, the resting chamber of the MPD, Gruntijackal is successfully given possession of Samantha Maxis' body within the device after his soul was infused into it through the Omega Key and the MPD was refueled, enabling him to regain his powers from the Aether. Richtofen soon fought alongside his master and Xarcoh against Novus, using the Yin Blade in battle. However, Novus were able to successfully destroy the MPD's fuel tanks and the chains harnessing it to the ground, allowing it to be sucked into the vaccum of space after the rooftop hatch was opened by the heroes. While Gruntijackal's powers were cut off and he was soon locked within the MPD as it hurled through space, Richtofen and Xarcoh were soon imprisoned in the Soul Jar by Jacob, who promptly left it to the same fate as the MPD.
Reclaiming the Yin Blade before it was sucked into space, the heroes opted to destroy the relic, as they believed no one should ever wield its dark power again. However, this would prove to be a devastating mistake, as the energies let out from the shattered Yin Blade managed to ripple into the Aether, destablizing it and causing major damage to their universe, which would eventually be resolved five years later.
Boss Rush[]
Richtofen would be granted a replica Yin Blade manifested by Prima Materia to use as his main weapon in the Boss Rush tournament while serving as a member of the Thirteen. After Richtofen's defeat, the replica would dematerialize and fade out.
Capabilities[]
Forged from a combination of Unistone, Dark Creation trace samples and a twist of dark magic, the Yin Blade is an extremely powerful weapon in terms of mysticism. Through its Unistone blades, the Yin Blade is capable of slicing through the fabric of universes and realms alike, generating tears that the user can use for fast travel. As a result of its Dark Creation samples, the Yin Blade is even capable of breaching into the Nexus, though a tear generated there can only last for a few moments. Furthermore, the Yin Blade's blades can be enhanced through other mystical sources to increase its tear-generating abilities even further, allowing for bigger tears to be manifested.
The Yin Blade's dark magic is extremely potent, capable of fully resurrecting the body of a soul should the soul itself not be deceased or weakened, as shown when Richtofen and Xarcoh achieve this while Gruntijackal is unable to. As demonstrated by Richtofen, should a departed soul be revived, they will instead be turned into a zombie, its will bound to the Yin Blade and its wielder. However, due to the instability of its own magic, the Yin Blade doubles as a containment vessel for it, protecting it to ensure it never was released en masse. Following the Yin Blade's destruction at the hands of Novus, its dark magic was violently unleashed upon the Arc 2 universe, ripping into the Aether through a weakpoint generated by the MPD and damaging its stability by upsetting the balance between light and darkness.

- Like the overall concept for Day of the Departed, the Yin Blade is also inspiried from the artifact of the same name from the LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu TV special "Day of the Departed" as well.
- It is one of RoachTheIntelCollector's favorite weapons.
- It is revealed in "Universal Convergence" that the Yin Blade is one of the few weapons ever to be forged at Uriqar, with the weapon's three blades being forged from Unistone, granting them their reality cutting powers.
- It is also revealed that a small portion of Dark Creation was utilized in the Yin Blade's creation as well.
